Can you make money with youtube?

I was at the drs office with my husband and my twins and there was this lady that was just so obsessed with my boys and just kept telling me how she couldn't believe how incredibly cute they are... then she said that I should post them doing funny things online and I can get paid to do it. I'm not trying to exploid my babies but was just wondering if people really do make money off youtube and how it works?
